Algebra 1A Text – Texas Algebra 1 (Prentice Hall Mathematics) TEXAS Coach TEKS Edition (Algebra 1)
COURSE DESCRIPTION - Students use symbols in a variety of ways to study relationships among quantities. Students use functions to determine one quantity from another, to represent and model problem situations, and to analyze and interpret relationships. Students work in many situations to set up equations and inequalities and use a variety of methods to solve them. Students use a variety of representations (concrete, pictorial, numerical, symbolic, graphical, and verbal), tools, and technology (including, but not limited to, calculators with graphing capabilities, data collection devices, and computers) to model mathematical situations to solve meaningful problems. The use of technology (Ti-NSpire calculators), will also be introduced to gain a better understanding of all of the topics to be discussed / learned throughout the curriculum.
RULES
1. Obey ALL school rules as stated. 2. Be ON TIME for class. 3. Respect others and their opinions. 4. Listen to the teacher or substitute. 5. Do ALL work as assigned. 6. Take care of our calculators.

GRADING POLICY
Your grade will be averaged as follows:
40% Common Assessments/Tests We will take 1 department common assessment each week, as well as a district common assessment at the nine week mark to check for Mastery. The District Nine Weeks Assessment will count as 2 test grades.
20% homework / classwork / participation* As homework / practice is vital to the comprehension of math strategies and solving problems we will generally have homework every class period. Class periods in which we have no quiz, homework will be collected and random problems will be graded for accuracy. Students will be expected to participate during class discussions and for class projects. Tardies will result in a loss of 20 daily participation points for each infraction. Students can gain the 20 points back by serving detention (before school) for 15 minutes. We will also be doing random ID and agenda checks as part of the students participation grade.
4. ABSENCES, LATE WORK, and RETAKES - If you (the student) are absent (excused), you will need to check with me as soon as you get back from your absence to get your MAKE-UP WORK. This work will need to be turned in in a timely manner. It is your responsibility to take care of your make-up work. If you are absent 1 day, you get one extra day to do the make-up work.
- LATE WORK (unexcused absences and NHI's) will be accepted but 20 points will be deducted for ALL late assignments. After assignments have been returned, you are required to do a different assignment (to avoid the possibility of borrowing homework).
- Up to 2 RETAKES will be allowed for assignments, but the retake/s score will be averaged together with the original score.
5. MATERIALS NEEDED
You will need to bring your LAPTOP, a PENCIL, your student ID, and your student agenda to class every day. You also need a small 3 ring binder (1 inch). The binder will also need 5 dividers.
6. NOTE TO PARENTS
You can always check your son or daughter’s grade by using the Parent Portal on the EPISD website. If you do not have access to the Parent Portal and you need a current report or any other information on your child, please let me know. The school will also be sending out progress reports each nine week period.
I will be in my room (S196) on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:45-8:30 am if your son or daughter needs assistance with their homework, make-up work, or extra tutoring.
I am looking forward to a GREAT fall semester. Let’s continue to build upon the Husky tradition of ‘Excellence.’ If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
